Joz Hind

We were asked to design ‘Joz Hind’, an organic kitchen in the heart of Jabal Al-Weibdeh by a beautiful couple, an Italian cook Luca and his Jordanian wife Hind. They wanted to start a family kitchen where visitors would gather around a table, and get served a home cooked seasonal meal.

You can enter the kitchen and watch Luca cook, have a little chat with Hind, and try some of their divine chocolate cake or ice-cream over the high counter. The inside of the facade serves as counter that overlooks the busy Shari’ah Street in Jabal Al-Weibdeh.

Working with the small area of the place, we designed three interlocking tables that can be assembled and reassembled in the side veranda to form a variety of communal arrangements  to host the visitors of the kitchen. We have experienced that magic of communal tables, when a group of strangers sit to eat a warm meal around the kitchen table, breaking the usual social barriers, and ending up sharing their stories and getting to know each other.

We wanted the tiles of the walls and the floors to fuse the facets of the kitchen together into one plane, also we wanted to reinforce the idea of a family kitchen in a playful and colourful way. We are pleased now to see how the tiles became part of the visual identity and brand of the place, people often Instagram a shot of the tiles with #JozHind tag.

The branding was done by Omar Al Zo’bi, who was inspired by Luca’s ability to “whip something together” to create the logo and graphics of the place.

Over the past year,  Joz Hind transcended being a mere kitchen, and became an eco-conscious health initiative in Amman. We are honored to be part of the creation of this place.
