** under construction**
Ghor Al Safi is a underprivileged farmers village south of Amman. We, Hayyez, were asked by UNESCO to redesign the community centre of the village currently run by the women’s association there. Ghor Al Safi women have exceptional knowledge in the local flora and vernacular traditions of using it. They use their knowledge in dyeing fabrics and doing crafts associated with the village culture in the community centre. So, it was essential to incorporate the dyeing process in the program of the space. Ghor Al Safi village is on the border of the dead sea which makes it a very warm area; we needed to find a sustainable cooling methods, so we went back to the ‘wind catcher’ concept which is present in our local culture, and we reinterpreted in the building. It was important for us for this project to be a community based project, so we included the women in the design process and the construction of the centre.

A project by women, for women.
